Great quote

P. J. O'Rourke:

"When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first things to be bought and sold are legislators. "

Hmmm... I thought we'd go into '09 with 'divided government'...

Battle for Congress Suddenly Looks Competitive

Granted, I'm a shiny person optimist who thought Republicans were going to lose at most 5 seats in '06, so take anything I say with more than a grain of salt.
My thinking, and this may sound heretical since I want to name my first born, male or female, Ronald Wilson Admir0l, is that the Dems having the House in the 80's but not the Senate throughout Reagan's tenure really wasn't a good thing.
Partially because we ended up with Justices O'Conner & Kennedy, but also because spending that went from 500 billion to a trillion was the Faustian bargain necessary for us to destroy the Soviets. ( All spending bills start in the House).

As we saw from 2002 - 2006, even having a Republican President, House & Senate, if the fuckers are corrupt, its not useful.
End corporate taxes now!

New! Improved! The 2008 Obama Gaffe-o-matic !!! Slices, dices, julians!

New Obama 'get tough' ad:
"Our economy wouldn't survive without the Internet, and cyber-security continues to represent one our most serious national security threats," [Obama spokesman Dan] Pfeiffer said. "It's extraordinary that someone who wants to be our president and our commander in chief doesn't know how to send an e-mail."

McCain bio, 2004:
McCain's severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes. Friends marvel at McCain's encyclopedic knowledge of sports. He's an avid fan - Ted Williams is his hero - but he can't raise his arm above his shoulder to throw a baseball.

Then we have THIS GEM from the man who promised to never question anyone's patriotism:
"So, when American workers hear John McCain talking about putting 'Country First,'" Obama said, "it’s fair to ask –- which country?"

I'm not saying the election is over -- the debates are still to come -- but at this point the fact Obama has never faced serious partisan opposition is coming back to bite him in the ass. If you remember, he only won his Senate seat because Jack Ryan, who I believe had a substantial lead going into September, imploded when his details of his divorce leaked out.

Once again, Bush is going to age incredibly well.

The Woodward Way of War

Lots I could say or babble about -- my main gripe with Arbusto is that leaks from CIA have neutered him, and not fighting back by pursuing criminal charges was his #1 mistake. Anyone see "anonymous" sourced reports about us going into Pakistan ? Why is that ANY of our business to know? Well, some unelected bureaucrat who disagrees wants to shape policy, so they dribble out classified information that limits the ability of the administration to maneuver.

Anyway, back on task. History is going to be very kind to Arbusto. Lincoln had his Mclellan, and I'll be interested as to who the narrative solidifies around - it looks as if Casey and the other mandarins in the Pentagon were more interested in playing politics than in winning a war.

Looking back at many of my thoughts on how we fight, and after reading "Fewer", the one child family is going to make future conflict that much more difficult for American Presidents of either party. The hullaballoo that was raised about unarmored humvees pales in comparison to thousands of casualties in mere hours during some of the battles in the Pacific during WWII. We shouldn't be surprised in years to come when the US loses mere dozens or scores of troops and calls it quits rather than pay the Iron Price for victory.

I heart Dick Cheney!

When Cheney was being confirmed for secretary of defense, he told his vetters in the first Bush administration that they should be aware of some "youthful indiscretions." He wasn't just referring to two drunk-driving arrests from over 25 years prior, but also the time he'd been fined for fishing out of season. Not a catch-and-release man back then (he tells me he hasn't killed a fish on purpose in roughly 15 years), "The $25 fine was not the worst part," he said. "They took my fucking fish."

One of life's little pleasures.

Too funny

Biden had an awkward moment during a rally in Columbia, Mo., Tuesday. At the start of his remarks, he pointed out several state lawmakers in the audience for praise. When he got to Chuck Graham, a state senator from Green Meadows, Biden urged the lawmaker to "stand up Chuck, let 'em see ya."

But Graham, who is in a wheelchair, can't stand up - a fact Biden quickly picked up on.

Yoiks. Republicans NEVER have 10 point leads.
